In January 1996, residents of Varginha, including a group of three young women, reported seeing strange creatures and at least one Unidentified Flying Object (UFO).
Creature Description: The beings were described as bipedal, about 1.6 meters (5 feet) tall, with oily brown skin, very thin bodies, large red eyes, and three protuberances (bumps) on their heads. Witnesses said the creature seemed weak or sick and made a sound "like a baby crying".
Military Involvement: A large military and emergency response followed, with claims that the Brazilian Army and fire department captured two creatures and cordoned off the town. There are also claims that US officials were involved in the retrieval and subsequent cover-up.
Associated Claims: Other reports included a college professor and pilot witnessing the UFO crash-land, military personnel dying under mysterious circumstances after handling one of the beings, and pathologists observing a unique bacteria on the creature.
Official Explanation
An investigation by the Brazilian Army concluded the events were a result of social amplification and misinterpretation. The official explanation stated that a city resident, described as "a mentally disabled man covered in mud," was mistaken for an alien creature by the witnesses, and that the movement of military personnel in the area was a routine operation.
Legacy
Despite the official denial, the Varginha incident remains popular, with numerous books and documentaries, such as Moment of Contact, exploring the eyewitness accounts and conspiracy theories. The city has embraced its fame, even installing an alien statue and featuring a spaceship-shaped water tower as a local symbol. But what is the real truth about this event???
