Between 2007 and 2009, night security guard Yalçin Yalman recorded a remarkable series of unidentified objects from Kumburgaz, on Turkey’s Sea of Marmara coast.
Over numerous nights, Yalman filmed what appeared to be luminous, disc or crescent-shaped objects hovering over the water. The recordings became particularly controversial because some of the heavily magnified footage appears to show a structured object with what some researchers have interpreted as figures or heads visible inside it.
The footage was eventually submitted for examination by Turkey's TÜBİTAK National Observatory. The surviving account of that examination says that a 35-minute MiniDV recording was examined by the Observatory's Image Processing Unit. However, the examination involved randomly selected portions of the footage, and the available report does not establish that the objects were extraterrestrial spacecraft. It is therefore important to distinguish between an object being unidentified and its origin being known.
The case continued into May 2009, when some of the most famous footage was recorded, including sequences in which apparent humanoid forms have been claimed to be visible. Other witnesses have also been associated with the sightings, including people who reportedly observed the objects while Yalman was filming.
