On November 17, 1986, during a cargo flight from Reykjavík to Anchorage, Alaska, the three-man crew of a Boeing 747-200F—led by experienced Captain Kenju Terauchi—reported encountering unidentified aerial objects over eastern Alaska at around 35,000 feet. They first spotted two bright, erratically moving lights that paced the plane, which they described as small "ships." These vanished, replaced by a massive "mothership" (estimated as large as two aircraft carriers) with a dark, walnut-shaped body and glowing sections, emitting noticeable heat. The object followed them for about 400 miles despite evasive maneuvers like turns and descents.The crew contacted Anchorage air traffic control, which detected intermittent radar echoes near the plane but no confirmed traffic. Nearby aircraft (a United Airlines flight and military planes) were diverted to investigate but saw nothing unusual. The objects disappeared as the plane neared Fairbanks, and Flight 1628 landed safely after roughly 50 minutes of sightings.The FAA investigated, compiling reports, transcripts, and radar data, but concluded no evidence of unknown aircraft, attributing radar hits to anomalies. Skeptics, like Philip Klass, suggested the crew mistook planets Jupiter and Mars (visible on the horizon) or atmospheric effects for UFOs, noting Terauchi's prior sightings. UFO proponents cite the crew's credibility, radar corroboration, and alleged CIA data confiscation as evidence of a cover-up. Terauchi was grounded by JAL amid media frenzy, and the case remains a prominent UFO incident with declassified documents available.
