Project Blue Book is an American historical drama television series that premiered on History on January 8, 2019. The main role of Dr. J. Allen Hynek is played by Aidan Gillen, and the first season consisted of ten episodes. The series is based on the real-life Project Blue Book, a series of studies on unidentified flying objects. On February 10, 2019, History renewed the series for a 10-episode second season which will premiere on January 21, 2020.

According to O’Leary and Jablonski, the story picks up about six months following the events of the Season 1 finale. They announced that they’re starting the season by delving into Area 51. Although the events in Roswell, NM took place in 1947 — outside of the Project Blue Book timeline — they’ve found a way to bring that to the show and reopen the case, creating a direct line from Roswell to Area 51. It’s going to be an origin story for General Harding, based on Nathan Twining, the real-life inspiration for Harding. Twining was present in Roswell and responsible for helping to cover that up.

“Project Blue Book” is inspired by the personal experiences of Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Gillen), a brilliant college professor recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead this clandestine operation (Project Blue Book) that researched thousands of cases, over 700 of which remain unsolved to this day. Each episode will draw from the actual case files blending UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history.

⇩⇩ DR. J. ALLEN HYNEK ⇩⇩

Dr. Josef Allen Hynek was an American astronomer and ufologist most famous for his research on UFOs (unidentified flying objects). He had served as scientific adviser to the UFO studies which were undertaken by the U.S. Air Force after which he became involved in his own independent study of the UFOs.

Eventually he developed a system of describing UFO sightings into six categories based on factors like distance of the sighting, appearances, and special features. This system, known as the Close Encounter classification system, established him as one of the foremost authorities on this subject.

Hynek acted as scientific advisor to UFO studies undertaken by the U.S. Air Force under three consecutive projects: Project Sign (1947–1949), Project Grudge (1949–1952), and Project Blue Book (1952–1969).
