On the night of March 20, 1966, what began as an ordinary evening on the farm of Frank Mannor near Dexter, Michigan, quickly became one of the most famous UFO cases in American history. After the family's dogs became unusually agitated, Mannor stepped outside and noticed a bright light descending toward a nearby swamp. Curious, he and his son walked toward the area, where they claimed to witness a silent, metallic, oval-shaped object hovering just above the marsh before it suddenly lifted into the sky and disappeared.
Their report was only the beginning. Over the following days, dozens of similar sightings were reported across southeastern Michigan, with police officers, college students, and ordinary citizens describing strange lights and unexplained aerial objects. The wave of sightings attracted national attention and prompted an investigation by Project Blue Book, the U.S. Air Force's official UFO program.
Astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek was sent to investigate. After interviewing witnesses, he suggested that at least some of the sightings could have been caused by glowing marsh gas, a natural phenomenon produced by decaying vegetation in swampy areas. Although Hynek intended the explanation to apply only to some reports, the phrase "swamp gas" quickly became associated with the entire Michigan UFO wave and was widely criticized by witnesses, the media, and many members of the public.
The controversy became so significant that Michigan Congressman Gerald Ford called for a Congressional investigation, arguing that Americans deserved a more thorough and credible examination of the events. The case was later featured on national television in the CBS Reports documentary *UFO: Friend, Foe, or Fantasy?*, bringing the debate over UFOs into millions of homes.
Nearly sixty years later, the Dexter, Michigan sightings remain one of the most discussed UFO incidents in history. While no definitive explanation has ever satisfied everyone involved, the case is remembered not only for the mysterious object reportedly seen over the swamp, but also for the lasting impact it had on public trust, government investigations, and the serious study of unidentified aerial phenomena.
